    I wrote a thing about… well, things. (It’s a good thing I’m a blogger, and not a poet or a marketer.)

“Aphobia” is not a good word. It sounds like an empty word or even like something meaning “lack of fear”. “Acephobia” or the more formal “asexophobia” are much better.
Sure, “a-phobia” is built directly according to the pattern of “homo-phobia, bi-phobia, trans-phobia”, but it doesn’t carry enough information in its structure by itself. I think a person from outside the asexual community would have a hard time guessing that “a-” stands for “asexual”, perhaps even if they saw that the text is about anti-asexual prejudice.

    • LOL, I thought the same thing when I saw that. I typically use “acephobia” for that reason.

    • Sphinx says:

Actually, aphobia was coined (on tumblr?) to cover both asexual AND aromantic people. There is a huge ongoing trend of people on tumblr lumping both groups together for purposes of exclusion from LGBT+ communities and hate (often expressed by people making blanket statements about “aces/aros” especially “cishet aces/aros”). Many people involved in the “discussion” that gave rise to that linkspam either see both groups as indistinguishable from each other, or while their real target is asexual people they will still include aros in their posts.

In fact, scrolling through the linkspam shows plenty of titles were people use “aces/aros” as a singular group they are discussing, which is why aphobia arose as a term to discuss when someone is both acephobic and arophobic at the same time.

“aphobe” has been around for a long time, although it hasn’t necessarily been in common use the whole time. The earliest AVEN mention I found was in 2003, and I there’s a thread from 2005 which also brings up the “lack of fear” thing.
