Every Friday, we will share links to news, blogs, and anything else we find interesting. We can’t catch everything, so you are invited to self-promote in the comments!
The AVENwiki was updated with additional analysis of the 2011 Asexual Awareness Week census.
Aqua asked whether the non-religious celibate community exists.
Matthew’s Place has started posting a series on asexual relationships.
Swankivy was interviewed on Weekend Sunrise, an Australian TV program.
CNN ran an article on asexuality.
The New York Times blog ran an article on asexuality.
That NY Times piece seemed like a decent visibility article until I got to this part: “72 percent of asexuals are ‘sex positive,’ meaning they think it’s O.K. for other people to have sex.” Holy crap. That easily ranks among the worst misunderstandings I’ve seen perpetrated in such an article, and now we’re going to get to deal with the fallout of readers coming away with the ‘knowledge’ that 28% of aces are flatly against anyone having sex. At least it’s been called out in the comments, and hopefully it’ll be corrected.
I don’t know where all the misunderstandings about sex-positivity are coming from–within the past week I’ve seen A. sex-positivity means you’re willing to have sex with other people (therefore, the majority of the ace community is having sex!), B. if you’re not sex-positive, you’re anti-sex, C. sex-negative means you don’t want to have sex, and sex-repulsed actually means anti-sex, etc. What is going on?
On some reflection, it’s actually my fault that NYT said that. I posted some discussion on my tumblr.
