  1. MacGyver, clearly. Scotty’s main talent is overestimating the amount of time it’ll take to fix things (“How else would I keep my reputation as a miracle worker?”). Plus, he has a trained crew of skilled technicians that actually do the work for him most of the time.

    • Then again, if it’s a no-holds-barred cage match, then phasers-set-to-vaporize Scotty would easily take out I-don’t-like-guns MacGyver….
      So… Hmmm…

      • Victrix says:

That the begs the question how far apart are they to begin with and do they get to begin with weapons drawn? And also is there clear line of sight?

        • Mac’s not gonna have anything to do with an actual weapon, so he wouldn’t take part in a duel like that. So if Scotty started with the phaser, it would be over before you can say “Aye, Captain”.
If they had to improvise a weapon from the environment, it might be more even. Not because Scotty’s engineering improvisational skills rival MacGyver’s, but because Scotty’s undoubtedly heard Kirk tell the tale of the Gorn over and over and over, so he’d know exactly what to do. Mac would have to figure it out, but it shouldn’t take him that long, and he’s likely better with his hands than Scotty is.

(Speaking of Scotty’s hands, did you know that James Doohan lost his right middle finger during the invasion of Juno Beach on D-Day? He often kept this hidden, but there is at least one scene in Star Trek III where it’s visible. (The scene where he sabotaged the warp drive of the chase ship.))
(Hmmm… And apparently he was actually in an episode of MacGyver. I’ll have to watch that one to see if it sheds any light on the scenario.)

          • Just watched the episode. “Speedy” (James Doohan) spent all but about two seconds asleep, while MacGyver had to fix his own car (even though it was Speedy’s garage). He also slept through a pair of thugs beating up an old man and stealing a car. That round definitely goes to MacGyver.

  2. Victrix says:

Given my introduction to MacGyver was a bunch of comedians on a game show given a bag of items and joking that MacGyver would be able to make a nuclear bomb out of them, it’s got to be MacGyver.
